Pionero Reserva: an exploration of lands and styles

A reflection of the innovative and experimental spirit of Viña Morandé, Pionero is the reserve line of our wines that shows the potential of its varietals from the Casablanca and Maule valleys, where the expression of the fruit is our focus.

With superior quality wines, deep respect for the terroir, and a constant focus on innovation, Viña Morandé creates wines that reflect its dynamic and adventurous spirit and the best expression of the terroirs from which they come. Thus, during our career, we have made a good number of attractive oenological creations, which have covered a wide range that goes from wines made with frozen grapes to fortified wines, including a very notable distillate in the style of Italian grappa.

One of its most recognized lines is Pionero, which symbolizes the exploratory spirit of the vineyard, which has led them to investigate new lafnds, endless blends, and diverse styles. For Morandé, these wines reflect the potential of the varieties present in the Casablanca and Maule valleys, where the expression of the fruit is our focus.

Pionero’s portfolio has 8 wines. It’s Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Maule Valley, and has notes of black fruits such as maqui, and blueberry and notes of red fruits such as morello cherry and raspberry. On the palate, it has a good structure and medium body, with fruit flavors, dark chocolate, and coffee. It has a nice persistence.

Carmenère, on the other hand, is a purple-red wine with violet hues. It has notes of fruits such as blackberries and cherries and is smooth, spicy, and medium-bodied on the palate. It comes from the Maule Valley, like Pionero Merlot, which is characterized by its notes of black fruits and spices such as cinnamon and fresh herbs. It is a fruity, juicy wine with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and long persistence.

Pionero País, a wine that seeks to rescue the ancestral strains of our country, is made up of 85% País strain and 15% Cinsault strain, both from the Maule Valley. It is a fresh, light-bodied wine with notes of red fruits such as raspberries and sour cherries. Pionero Pinot Noir, meanwhile, is made up of 93% Pinot Noir and 7% Chardonnay from the Casablanca Valley. It is a delicate, very fresh wine that balances its acidity and its fine tannin texture very well. It has notes of red fruits and certain spices. The Rosé, also from the Casablanca Valley, is a pale pink wine with notes of forest fruits such as raspberry and strawberry, and flowers. On the palate, it is delicate and fresh in texture.

Continuing with the white varieties, Pionero Sauvignon Blanc, from the Maule Valley, is a creamy wine with significant volume in the mouth, thanks to the fact that, during storage, the wine remains on its fine lees until bottling. It is fresh, fruity, and with a tense acidity, with a balanced body and a long finish.

Finally, Pionero Chardonnay is a pale and bright yellow wine, with citrus and fruity notes reminiscent of pear, green apple, and fresh pineapple. On the palate it is a fresh, fruity, and balanced wine. Medium-bodied and creamy, with very good persistence.
